Ripper was one of the most famous and renowned killer in history. Although, he was not the first serial killer, he was the first to do so in such a hugely populated area london. Although the number of victims is unofficial, the number is thought to be around 5, all prostitues within whitechapel area in east london, murdered in 1888. The true identity of Jack the ripper is unknown becasue he was never caught. The main victims names were: Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddows and Mary Jane Kelly. Jacks victims were stabbed, mutilated, usually disembowelled and often missing organs. There are a number of reasons why Ripper was never caught. Firstly, the geography of london played a part in his escape. London was like a maze. at the time, whitechapel was badly organised, with many treets and dark alleys, which was the perfect place yo murder someone. At night, the only source of light in the dark alleyways would be tiny lamps, which would flicker. Lack of technology was another main reason. In victorian times, they had extremely limited forensic science they had no DNA, fingerprinting, blood typing etc. The detection of murder generally involved eyewitnesses accounted and dumb luck. In other words, unless he was caught red handed at the scene, there was no way to connect him with the victim. It Jack the riper was ner now, in modern day london and did the same thing, we could be sure that he wouldVe been caught in a few weeks, or even days. Without forensic science, it was very unlikely to catch Jack the ripper.
